Katarina Mathernova

Katarína Mathernová is a Distinguished Adjunct Professor in the BA in International Affairs programme at the Brussels School of Governance and is currently Deputy Director-General in the European Commission’s Directorate-General Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR). She focuses on relations with the Eastern Partnership Countries, international financial institutions, and on migration/refugee issues. Previous to her work for the European Commission, she has also had an accomplished career in international organisations and national government, including senior positions at the World Bank, and the Office of Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, as well as a distinguished legal career in Corporate Finance Law.

Katarina Mathernová holds an LLM from the University of Michigan and a Doctor Juris from Comenius University. At the Brussels School of Governance, she teaches the course titled “International Approaches to State-building, Reform and Good Governance”, co-taught with Svitlana Kobzar and Vsevolod Samokhvalov.
